Leveraging upon years of relevant institutional knowledge and experience, the team continues to evaluate and develop opportunities with a focus on efficiency and sound returns.

The Derby team is comprised of seasoned, proven professionals focused on efficiently and effectively acquiring, managing, and developing assets in prospective oil and gas plays that exhibit sound geoscience-driven properties.  

OUR TEAM

Mr. Long has 30 years of experience in the acquisition, management, and operations of oil and gas assets. Long also serves as the CEO of the General Partners of Bakken HBT LP, Bakken HBT II LP, and SCOOP I LP, which are existing, non-operated working interest funds that hold interests in ~1,200 Bakken wells and ~130 SCOOP wells. Long is a 1979 graduate of the University of Oklahoma with a B.B.A. in Petroleum Land Management and is a 1983 graduate of Harvard Business School with an M.B.A.
Steve Long

CEO

Mr. Jones has 38 years’ experience in the oil and gas industry, most recently working at Continental Resources as the Geologic Manager and Senior Geologic Adviser. Jones also has operations experience from working for Gulf Oil Corporation, Sabine Production Company, Terra Resources, Ascent Energy, and Pacific Enterprises. Jones holds a B.S. in Geology from the University of South Carolina and attended graduate school at the University of Oklahoma.

Mr. Clark is a Petroleum Landman with more than 28 years of experience in the oil and gas industry. Clark and his firm have provided a broad spectrum of contract land-related services to many of the leading E&P companies in the Mid-Continent region, in addition to steering all efforts for Bakken HBT LP, Bakken HBT II LP, and SCOOP I LP, which are existing non-operated working interest funds that hold interests in ~1,200 Bakken wells and ~130 SCOOP wells.

Mr. Long has 12 years’ experience in the oil and gas industry, in a variety of roles including land, finance and investor relations. Long has been with the affiliated companies since inception and has been crucial to the formation of the various entities and execution of the business plans. Long holds a B.B.A. from the University of Oklahoma in Business Management.
Jake Long

VP of Administration

Mr. Weatherholt has 14 years’ experience in financial services to the oil and gas industry. Prior to joining the Derby companies, Weatherholt served as Senior Vice President in Energy Lending at Bank of Oklahoma, where he worked for 12 years. Weatherholt holds a B.B.A. from the University of Oklahoma with a double major in Energy Management and Finance.

Mr. Kennedy has 17 years of experience in the acquisition, management, and operations of oil and gas assets. Kennedy’s oilfield career began in 2001 as a Field Engineer with Schlumberger Drilling and Measurements in Venezuela as a Logging While Drilling engineer and quickly moved into a Directional Drilling role where he worked both on-shore as well as deep water offshore assets. Kennedy drilled some of the first extended reach drilling wells with numerous sidetracks in the horizontal portion of the wellbore. As Drilling Engineer and Manager for Continental Resources Inc., Kennedy drilled hundreds of wells in Oklahoma, North Dakota, Texas, and Louisiana. Kennedy is a graduate of the University of Texas at Austin with a B.S. in Petroleum Engineering.
Robert Kennedy

Mr. Ainsworth has 40 years of experience in Geophysics, most recently working 20+ years at Continental Resources Inc. as the Geophysical Manager and Sr. Geophysicist. Ainsworth also has additional operations experience from his time with Pacific Enterprises, Union Oil of California, and Amarex. Ainsworth holds a B.S. in Geophysics from Penn State University and is a licensed Professional Geoscientist in the state of Texas.
Ken Ainsworth

VP of Geosciences

Mr. Parker has 13 years of experience in geological interpretation, prospecting, development, and operations of oil and gas assets in Oklahoma and Montana. From 2004 to 2017, Parker worked for Continental Resources Inc. as a Sr. Exploration and Supervising Geologist with focused efforts in the SCOOP, STACK, and MERGE areas and has extensive geological operations experience for wells drilled in the Woodford Shale and Mississippian formation. Mr. Parker is a graduate of Oklahoma State University with both a B.S. and M.S. in Geology and is an existing member of the American Association of Petroleum Geologists.

Mr. Fosbenner is a CPA with 17 years of experience providing services of financial management, tax preparation and consultation, and auditing and assurance to private and public oil & gas companies as a partner of Smith, Carney & Co., P.C. Additionally, in 2013, Mr. Fosbenner worked to prepare MidCentral Energy Services for a merger with New Source Energy Partners, LP, a publically traded MLP; Mr. Fosbenner remained as Controller of New Source Energy Partners. Fosbenner holds a B.B.A. from Southwestern Oklahoma State University and is a member of the American Institute of Certified Public Accountants and Oklahoma Society of Certified Public Accountants.
Kevin Fosbenner

VP of Accounting

Mr. McMahan has over 22 years of technical support/strategy experience in the upstream/midstream energy industry. As a designer for Koch Industries, Inc., McMahan’s midstream experience included HPGL pipeline and supporting facilities/system design, civil and structural design for sites, piping/instrumentation diagrams, asset mapping (GIS), ROW layouts, pipeline survey and asset relocation design services. For 15 years, McMahan was both a Geo-Technical Services and Strategic Technical Services Manager for Continental Resources, Inc. where he was responsible for technical resource planning functions and technical budget forecasts for the Exploration Department for software, hardware, data, and contract support services. McMahan holds an A.A.S. in Engineering Design Technology from Northern Oklahoma College and a B.S. in Business/Leadership Management from Southern Nazarene University. McMahan is also currently a member of the Oklahoma City Leadership Team for the Professional Petroleum Data Management Association.
